  1. Honoring the Hawaiian Lifeguards

Every morning, over 450 guards of the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association wake up with a mission to maximize safety in and around the ocean. These brave men and women face extreme conditions to protect their coastal communities, which is just one reason we’re proud to outfit these heroes with footwear built to their needs. From the slick rocky outcropping around Hanauma Bay to the 25 foot swells of the storied North Shore, these sandals and shoes support any situation the guards encounter.

OluKai is proud to give back to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association financially and with a donation of product to every single lifeguard. In July, armed with thousands of shoes and slippah’s we hit the beach to outfit the guards with the tools necessary to train and save lives. To celebrate the guards and honor their service, we sparked up the grill and cooked up a tasty barbeque on each island - O’ahu, Hawai’i Island, Kauai, and Maui, uniting friends and family in every district. The opportunity to talk story, get feedback on product and hear how the lifeguards put it to the test everyday enables us to make the best shoes and sandals in the world for the conditions they face.

Wrapping up the series at the Ocean Safety Conference and Jr. Lifeguard State Championship in Kauai, we are humbled by the opportunity to outfit the men and women who risk their lives for the safety of others.

  2. Hawaii State Lifeguard Conference & Junior Lifeguard State Championship

The Hawaii State Lifeguard Conference and Junior Lifeguard State Championship took place from July 30 to August 2, 2014 on the island of Kauai. The theme for day one was the economic benefit of beach safety and how it affects the tourism industry. Various guest speakers from across the country lectured on the topic. The keynote speech was given by LA County lifeguard legend, Chief BobBurnside, inventor of the 'Burnside Rescue Buoy' who also founded the ULSA organization in 1964.

    Unknown Unknown-1

On day two, 150 junior lifeguards from Kauai, Maui and the Big Island came together to compete in the 2014 State Junior Lifeguard Championship. The island youth competed in six events throughout the day, including: a 1,000-meter beach run; beach flags, run-swim-run, paddleboard relay, 200-meter swim; and a new event called the 'Iron Guard' a swim, run-paddle. Defending champions Kauai, claimed their 11th straight title winning first place, Big Island came in second and Maui Island third. It was a great weekend and we were pleased to be involved.

Each pair of HLA sealed styles are thoughtfully constructed specifically to meet their needs. OluKai Konohiki (caretaker) and member of the Hawaiian Waterman Hall of Fame, Archie Kalepa shares: It's a sandal that has been punished, proven, researched and refined and is personally the best slipper I've ever worn."

This month, OluKai will outfit over 450 Hawaiian lifeguards with shoes and sandals at several locations on Maui, Kauai, and Oahu ending with a special proclamation by Billy Kenoi, mayor of the Big Island. A portion of proceeds of the thoughtfully constructed HLA footwear goes to support the Junior Lifeguards, an ongoing component to OluKai’s devoted Giveback Program.

“I’m thrilled to share the latest innovation in footwear with the lifeguards this month. From a technical standpoint, the Holomua embodies the level of dedication of the brand’s partnership to develop groundbreaking footwear ready to perform at the level that the gracious HLA members need to do their job. It’s a sandal that has been punished, proven, researched and refined and is personally the best slipper I’ve ever worn,” says Kalepa.

Lifeguards from all over Hawaii will convene on Maui, Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island at several in-store presentations to receive their official HLA footwear. All styles, including the Holomua, are also available to consumers nationwide as well as OluKai.com.

Teams from Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, and Oahu came together with high anticipation for the day's rigorous athletic events designed to showcase the skills they learned from summer training.

The Junior Lifeguard competitors were cheered on by their coaches and mentors from the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association (HLA), peers, family and friends as they battled in both individual and team disciplines in five events throughout the day, including: a 1,000-meter beach run, beach flags, run-swim-run, paddleboard relay, and a 200-meter swim. Muffi Hanneman, former mayor of Honolulu and current gubernatorial candidate for the State of Hawaii, addressed the lifeguards and fire chiefs and spoke on the importance of the junior lifeguard program. Hanneman also expressed the vital role that Hawaii lifeguards have in keeping locals and visitors safe and lauded the guards as the "ultimate first responders" considering their combined ocean safety knowledge and paramedic training.

OluKai is the official footwear of the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, worn by over 450 working guards. Part of the proceeds from every Kia'i sandal and Kia'i Trainer goes directly to the Hawaiian Junior Lifeguard Program. This donation is inspired by OluKai's 'Ohana Giveback Program where OluKai contributes its time, money and resources to support cultural and environmental preservation efforts in Hawaii and beyond.

Each year, OluKai outfits all 450 Hawaiian lifeguards in the Kia'i sandal. In 2010, OluKai continued its partnership with the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association by developing the Kia'i Trainer to handle the guards' rigorous all-island fitness training demands. During the 2010 Junior Lifeguard Championship ceremony, OluKai presented Oahu lifeguard Captain and Director of the HLA, Ralph Goto, and Kauai Captain Kalani Vierra with 450 Kia'i Trainers to outfit every lifeguard in Hawaii as well as an additional $11,500 in monetary support.

  7. The Kia’i: OluKai Serves the Waterman Lifestyle Through the HLA

OluKai continues its partnership with the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association in 2009 with the Kia’i – translation: Guard.

The Kia’i serves the ocean community and its culture as the official footwear of the HLA, the world’s most elite water safety organization. Over 420 working guards wear the sandal as part of their uniform while patrolling the ocean’s most dangerous breaks. It was originally introduced exclusively in Hawaii in 2008 and will be made available to specialty surf shops nationwide in 2009.

Proceeds from Kia’i sales help support the HLA’s Junior
Lifeguard program on the islands. This underfunded program introduces water safety, first-aid and surf rescue techniques to thousands of kids across Hawaii. The guards contribute their time and knowledge to the young participants in order to inspire them and to increase their self-confidence, physical conditioning, and ocean awareness. The result of this effort serves Hawaii with safer conditions, greater respect for the ocean and more enjoyment for locals and tourists alike.

Hawaii’s beaches have an annual attendance in the tens of millions. Of the residents who spend their time on the shores year around, more than half of the population are under eighteen years of age. At least thirty-two classes can be provided throughout the islands when the Junior Lifeguard Program is fully funded. Guest lecturers who share their insight and give advice to the junior guards include ocean aquatic experts and often world class champions from various water sports and activities.

OluKai partnered with the HLA to design the Kia’i as a hybrid of beauty and social responsibility, detailing island chain embroidery and laser-etched HLA footbed logo. It is a water resistant sandal that features jersey knit lining, neoprene backer, soft nylon toe post webbing and a non-slipping EVA footbed. Its compression molded EVA midsole and the deeper, anatomically contoured drop-in fit provides maximum support for all day comfort. Its non-marking, gum rubber outsole enhances its performance with an elegant coral reef design for added grip.

“We are a proud and humble supporter of the HLA and its Junior Lifeguard Program on the islands,” says Kerry Konrady, Director of Marketing for OluKai. “It is a wonderful opportunity for us to be a part of an inspirational and powerful group of watermen who have such a positive impact on the next generation of Hawaiian lifeguards.”
